Magnetized Accretion Inside the Marginally Stable Orbit around a Black Hole

چکیده

Qualitative arguments are presented to demonstrate that the energy density of magnetic fields in matter accreting onto a black hole inside the marginally stable orbit is automatically comparable to the rest-mass energy density of the accretion flow. Several consequences follow: magnetic effects must be dynamically significant, but cannot be so strong as to dominate; outward energy transport in Alfvén waves may alter the effective efficiency of energy liberation; and vertical magnetic stresses in this region may contribute to “coronal” activity. 2 00 3 Black Hole Accretion Disks On The Edge

The local axisymmetric stability of hydrodynamical and magnetized, nearly-Keplerian gaseous accretion disks around non-rotating black holes is examined in the vicinity of the classical marginally-stable orbit (at radii ∼ R ms). An approximate Paczynski-Wiita pseudo-Newtonian potential is used. Hydrodynamical disks are linearly unstable inside a radius which differs slightly from the classical R...

Simulations of Accretion Flows Crossing the Last Stable Orbit

We use three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations, in a pseudo-Newtonian potential, to study geometrically thin accretion disc flows crossing rms, the marginally stable circular orbit around black holes. We concentrate on vertically unstratified and isothermal disk models, but also consider a model that includes stratification. In all cases, we find that the sonic point lies just inside ...

Three-dimensional Simulations of Magnetized Thin Accretion Disks around Black Holes: Stress in the Plunging Region

We describe three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a geometrically thin accretion disk around a non-spinning black hole. The disk has a thickness h/r ∼ 0.05−0.1 over the radius range (2−20)GM/c2. In steady state, the specific angular momentum profile of the inflowing magnetized gas deviates by less than 2% from that of the standard thin disk model of Novikov &...

Magnetic Stresses at the Inner Edges of Accretion Disks Around Black Holes

For the past twenty-five years, nearly all analyses of accretion disk dynamics have assumed that stress inside the disk is locally proportional to pressure (the “α-model”) and that this stress goes to zero at the marginally stable orbit. Recently, it has been demonstrated that MHD turbulence accounts for the bulk of internal disk stress. In contradiction with the traditional view, the stress fr...
